IITH, Yenagoa Partners NDDC, OBYC to Graduate First Cohort in Fashion Design & POP Installation

The International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality, Yenagoa, has successfully graduated its first cohort of youth trainees in Fashion Design and Plaster of Paris [POP] Installation, under a collaborative empowerment scheme with the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Council.

The programme, themed “Unlocking the Key Skills and Potential of Our Youth as a Catalyst for Development Across the Region,” aligns with the Institute’s mandate and accreditation in vocational and hospitality training.

Speaking as Chief Host, Prof. Apuega Arikawei, Rector of the Institute, expressed gratitude to NDDC and OBYC for the partnership. He said the collaboration reflects the Institute’s commitment to producing job-ready graduates with practical skills.

Prof. Arikawei described the training as “a privilege” and cautioned beneficiaries against selling their start-up packs. He warned that such actions could undermine future funding and discourage partners from investing in Bayelsa youths.

Barr. Lyna Okara, Esq., Director of Commercial and Industrial Development, NDDC, who represented the Managing Director/CEO Chief Samuel Ogbuku, commended the Institute’s delivery of the training. She said Ogbia was only the first phase, with plans to extend the scheme to all eight LGAs of Bayelsa.

Representing the NDDC Bayelsa State Director, Engr. Godknows Alamiesegha, HOD Commercial and Industrial Development Gesiere Okoloba said the Institute’s role was pivotal in equipping youths with productive skills to reduce unemployment and social vices.

She also oversaw the presentation of certificates and start-up packs to the graduates, urging them to use the tools to build self-reliant careers.

Comr. Mpuruaziba Joe Akaragha, National President of OBYC and Training Organizer, described the Institute as the “engine room” of the scheme. He thanked the Rector, staff, and NDDC for making the first cohort a success, and appealed for the model to be replicated statewide.

The graduation featured beneficiary testimonies, certificate issuance, and the formal handover of trade start-up packs by NDDC officials. Mr. Columbus, Deputy Director, Commercial Industrial Development, gave the vote of thanks.
